Introducing the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

xperia-z3-compact-mandarin-1240x840-6732d63f6eb7dfe080a35e4f4f04c920

Sony has announced their latest addition to their ‘Compact’ Range, coming in as the smaller model for the Z3.

This new handset comes equipped with a 4.6 Inch full touch screen, 0.3 of an inch bigger than its predecessor and we believe the reason for his small increase is to rival the new Samsung and Apple releases.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact comes equipped 20.7 Megapixel camera and a forward facing camera of 2.2 Megapixel. These cameras are a statement of intent by Sony as they are both considerably better than their direct rivals!

With an Internal memory of 16 Gigabytes the Sony is remarkably average in this aspect; however this is made up by having 2 Gigabytes of RAM and the option to buy a Micro SD card for additional storage of up to 128 Gigabytes.

The big selling point for the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact is that it comes IP68 certified meaning it is water resistant for depths of up to 1 Meter, the screen is also shatter proof making the Xperia Z3 Compact one of the strongest touch screens on the market!

With regards to battery power, the Xperia Z3 compact also comes well equipped and has a talk time of up to 14 hours; this is particularly impressive considering that the phone is also able to run on all formats of 4G LTE.

Like all new Android phones it comes equipped with the latest KitKat version as well as having JAVA installed as standard, making it great competition for the iPhone.

The handset comes priced in at a very reasonable £430.00 meaning it is free for new customers on a plan that is £36.00 making it over £10.00 cheaper than its rivals!

When it comes down to choosing it will always be a hard decision, as a brand Apple and Samsung are highly spoken of but with Samsung breathing down their necks they are making all the right noises to become this year’s best manufacturer!

The Samsung Galaxy Alpha Vs The Apple iPhone 6

The newest Samsung Galaxy handset has now hit the shelves! This phone has come out it would appear to directly rival the new Apple iPhone 6.

Both phones come equipped with a 4.7 Inch full touch screen, whilst there are some aspects of the Samsung Galaxy Alpha that are still to be announced, there are some aspects of it that are already clearly better than the Apple iPhone 6.

The camera on the iPhone 6 hasn’t improved from the previous models at 8 Megapixel whereas the Galaxy Alpha boasts an impressive 12 Megapixel camera! The forward facing camera is also better equipped at 2.1 Megapixel compared to 1.2 Megapixel on the iPhone 6.

The minimum memory on the Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes in at 32 Gigabytes, where as the iPhone 6 is at 16 Gigabytes, however the Alpha doesn’t have any room for improvement in this field where as the iPhone can have a memory capacity up to an impressive 128 Gigabytes.

The speed in which the Samsung Galaxy Alpha runs is also extremely impressive as it has 2 Gigabytes of RAM as appose to 1 Gigabyte in the Apple iPhone 6.

One big plus to the Samsung Galaxy Alpha is that it comes enabled with Java that the majority of video’s run on, something that the iPhone doesn’t have and this has long been a complaint of Apple!

In terms of price, the new Apple iPhone 6 is commanding a price of around £520.00 whereas the new Samsung Galaxy Alpha comes in at approximately £450.00.

This price difference means that Samsung have the significant edge when it comes to getting a cheaper contract!

Which phone is better?

As always it will always come down to personal preference, some find IOS far easier to use than Android and for that reason will choose Apple.

However if you are making your decision based on the hardware of the handsets, early indications look to be pointing directly at the Samsung Galaxy Alpha!!

Phones 4u on the edge of liquidation

phones 4u

The decline of Phones 4u has almost neared its end; it came as a shock to most put the fact is that this started back in April 2012.

A Company which was once sold for £1.47 Billion and in 2013 recorded a profit of £100 Million is now on the verge of becoming no more.

In April 2012 Phones 4u were dealt their first blow when up and coming Three network withdrew their business, this was followed by two successful years however in January 2014 O2 also decided to exit their agreement.

This left Phones 4u in a tough position as they were now only able to offer EE and Vodafone upgrades, however in September 2014 both EE and Vodafone decided not to renew their contracts and subsequently Phones 4u were forced into administration days later!

While this might seem like the world against Phones 4u, it has now come to light that EE did in fact attempt to renew their partnership but Phones 4u requested too much commission and would not negotiate any less.

The big losers in all of this are the 5,600 staff members who are now facing redundancy just three months before Christmas, many of which will also not qualify for Statutory Redundancy Pay.

Staff are even less likely to be impressed when they hear the news that Vodafone were also in negotiations for a takeover of Phones 4u with the help of EE as recent as June!

This is just another black mark in a catalogue of errors made by the men behind the scenes at Phones 4u and they have now left themselves in a dog fight to try and keep their heads above water.

All hope is not lost however as the networks are always willing to listen and come to an agreement, the bad news for Phones 4u is that in order to successfully make new agreements they will have to lower their demands, dramatically!

Introducing the iPhone 6 PLUS the iPhone 6 Plus!

Apple has now announced their new handsets, as they always do in September! This year they have broken the trend and introduced two devices that both have larger screens!

The Apple iPhone 6 sees the screen size increase to 4.7 inch, competing directly with the Samsung Galaxy S5 and The HTC One, whereas the Apple iPhone 6 Plus has come in with an impressive 5.5 Inch touch screen to directly rival the Samsung Galaxy Note!

These announcements have been met by mixed reviews, some happy that Apple have finally introduced a larger screen phone, others disappointed that they have completely abandoned the smaller screen models!

In terms of an improvement the specifications of the iPhone 6 are not too dissimilar to the previous models, bringing in wide criticism from fans who want the very best, one thing that has been very well received is the new curved shape to the phone making it look more modern!

Apple also announced some future products due to arrive, They mentioned their new Apple watch designed specifically to rival the Samsung Galaxy Gear, all of Apple’s technology as always we be compatible bringing a whole new dimension to how watches will be used.

Apple have also announced their new ‘Apple Pay’ service meaning you can pay on your Apple devices in more stores, this has been largely well received however there are some concerns that Apple are making people rely on their products too much!

This worry with this is that if it is more difficult for people to change from Apple then it may become more expensive for the consumers.

How are these devices priced?

Well as always Apple are priced right at the very top, and if you would like to walk away with the handset today it comes at a rather steep £54.00 a month!

There is a lot to do on these new devices but do they really represent value for money? That remains to be seen!

Apple iPhone 6 set to be announced!

It is that time of year once again, the time of year where the newest and best Smartphone’s get announced and this year is no different!

The Apple iPhone 6 is due to be announced on the 9th September at an Apple conference in California.

So what can we expect?

Although nothing is concrete we are expected the iPhone 6 so have a more rounded design than all the previous models, the other big change we are expecting is screen size.

Previously Apple have refrained from following the market trend for bigger phones but this time it looks like they have finally caved in as the new rumored screen size is 4.7”.

According to reports Apple have also reinforced their screen, traditionally it was just a standard glass screen meaning it quite often broke, however they are now using Sapphire Glass. Not much is known about Sapphire Glass however it is believed to be stronger than the well know Gorilla glass.

Apple have also recently been working on deals with MasterCard, Visa and American Express which points to Apple creating their own contactless payment method.

The camera is also something that people can look forward to as Sony have provided the 13 Megapixel lens for even better picture quality.

With the release of this handset we are certainly expecting big things, it could quite possibly be the best iPhone since the iPhone!

The timing of such a handset is impeccable for Apple as they have recently lost ground on the other big manufacturers, not to mention this handset will be out on the market weeks before Samsung’s, HTC’s and Sony’s new products.

Apple has long been doubted in their ability to keep up with the market but they are certainly pulling out all the stops to make sure they stay top!

Once again these are, at the end of the day, just rumors but the only thing we do know for a fact is that at 6PM on Tuesday 9th September in front of approximately 2,400 people Apple have announcements to make!

Get your hands on the newly released Nokia Lumia 930!

Nokia announced their new flagship handset back in April this year, it has now finally hit the shelves and it is safe to say we are very excited by what we see!!

The Nokia Lumia 930 is rated 8.4/10 on phone comparison website GSMArena. Coming ready installed with the latest operating system Windows Phone 8.1!

The handset comes with a 5 Inch full touch screen and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for extra protection; we believe this handset will directly rival the new Apple iPhone as well as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4

The phone comes equipped with a 20 Megapixel rear face camera and a 1.2 Megapixel forward facing camera!

The memory on this device is particularly impressive as it comes with 32 Gigabytes and 2 Gigabytes of RAM to ensure the phone has a great speed, one downside is that there is no option for additional memory!

The Nokia Lumia 930 also comes with Near Field Communication readily available and also the latest Bluetooth and USB connections.

In terms of battery life, smart phone user will be very impressed as the Nokia Lumia 930 has a talk time of up to 15 Hours and 30 Minutes which on paper is one of the best battery life’s on the market

If all this information sounds like it would be beneficial then you should also know that the phone comes at a very competitive price!

This is available through Contact Telecoms for business users from £30.00 a month! If you are a SIM-Only user and would like to buy the handset then it is available for a very reasonably £360.00 + VAT, 25% cheaper than the 11 month old Apple iPhone 5S!

When Samsung and Apple do eventually release their new handsets they will almost certainly be more expensive than the Nokia Lumia 930! Maybe this time Nokia have done enough to tempt people over from Android and IOS and try to retain a bigger share of the market!

EE have been ranked as the best network in 2014

om4g-566x356

EE have once again continued to dominate the market by being ranked as the best mobile network operator for the second year running.

The Rootmetrics UK Network Performance report is scheduled two times each year and in the most recent report EE were incredibly ranked first in 5 of the 6 award categories.

In the remaining one category EE had to settle as joint winners as the award was shared with Three who subsequently finished second in the overall standings.

This news is bad reading for the people behind O2 and Vodafone as they have seen their share of the market slip over the past 18 months.

This is mainly due to EE’s success in the 4G LTE market and Three’s ability to offer a completely unlimited internet plan.

It should be noted that an O2 spokesman has challenged the findings by Rootmetrics UK and have stated that in their own survey O2, unsurprisingly, came first across the board, such claims however seem to have fallen upon deaf ears.

Operators1

Why are EE ranked number one?

Since gaining the sole rights to distribute 4G in November 2012, EE have managed to get a large number of towns and cities running on a good level of coverage.

In terms of business packages EE have made international roaming far cheaper than other networks by offering 180 minutes to be used in Europe and the USA.

Vodafone have been seen to reduce their advertising campaigns which may go some way to explaining the poor results for them. Whereas O2 have introduced their O2 refresh package which has not be as successful as they would have liked!

It is hard to say who will be the number one network this time next year; however EE and Three seem to have moved strides ahead of the alternative networks! It would take something miraculous for it to be one of the other networks so for now it looks like a simple two horse race!

Running your business… Shared or Solo?

4586150226_248x186

When looking for the perfect business package on EE, customers find it hard to decide if the phones should be on a shared package or individual packages.

The truth is this all depends on the amount of handsets and how much you will use the phones.

For a business with a low number of phones you may find that building a shared package actually costs more than going for an individual plan. For a large number of phones it is always better going on shared plans as you are always eligible for discount on your line rental.

The big problem arises for average business accounts with mixed usage;

Pros and Cons of Solo plan;

om4g-566x356

Each phone has an individual allowance, meaning each person can be put on an individual package that completely covers them. Data is also included in the package so each person can keep track of what they use and what they overspend on!

However the main downside of these plans is price, pound for pound these business plans almost always work out slightly more expensive, it also can restrict users who use their phones more by capping their allowances.

Pros and Cons of Shared plan;

shared

Shared business plans on EE are extremely popular because if you get it right, it can save you a fortune! Each user gets unlimited calls and texts to talk between the group, meaning that if you don’t make many calls to people outside your business the bills can be cut significantly.

Because data is shared it can give people who use more internet more freedom as they don’t need to worry about going over a small allowance!

The big problem with shared plans is estimating allowance, if you underestimate the allowances needed it will not be long before you get a big bill!

Which one should you go for? More often than not business users on a shared package reap bigger rewards! However just make sure you know exactly what you need otherwise you may have to part with some well earned money!!

Wearable technology sales set to soar!

Galaxy-Gear-Concept

Over the previous 12 months we have seen the introduction of two brand new products on the market, the smart watch and Google glasses!

A recent study by CCS Insight states that over the next 5 years sales of wearable technology is set to sky rocket!

In 2013 9.7 million wearable watches and bands were shipped throughout the world, and CCS Insight claim that by 2018 we could see this number increased to 135 Million and a massive 87% of wrist worn items will be ‘smart’.

These figures come after the success of the Samsung Galaxy Gear, a device that allows you to answer calls and read text messages with great ease.

Future projects are all aimed at making mobile phones and watches compatible with day to day equipment such as cars and televisions, meaning you have more power at your hands!

Buying one of these watches isn’t going to break the bank as they are now available from around £160.00 and free on some phone contracts!

The same, however, cannot be said for the new Google Glasses! If you want to purchase these futuristic glasses they will set you back approximately £1,300.00!!

index

This new innovation gives you information where you can see it… right in front of your eyes! The main pull at the moment is that the glasses have the ability to record, meaning they are very popular for people who want to capture the moments!

The glasses also have the ability to play music, not to mention the ability to make and receive calls!!

This isn’t the first time these type of glasses have been attempted however it is the first time they have been developed and distributed mainstream!

One thing is for certain and that is that the technology we know and love in today’s world is going to be very different in tomorrow’s world!

The evolution of the Smart Phone… 20 Years on!

IBM Simon

Almost 20 years to the day since the first smart phone came onto the market, we take a look at how phones have evolved into a necessity rather than a luxury!

The IBM Simon was first released in august 1994, it was the first phone that featured a telephone feature as well as PDA features all in one device.

The phone has a 4.5 Inch screen that required a stylus pen and had a memory capacity of 1 Megabyte.

It also came at a very reasonable price of £540.00 making it by far the most expensive device on the market!

The big pull of this phone back in 1994 was to people in business, this was the only device that allowed you to send a fax whilst on the move!

20 years later and with the advancements in technology sending a fax on your phone seems like a complete waste of time!

Internet, Applications, Conference calling, streaming and Emails are all things done by the average phone user on a day to day basis!

So what will phones look like in the next 20 years?

Flexible screens are currently under development by a manufacturer called IKEV. What purpose this will serve remains to be seen, although it would be pretty cool!

Samsung Galaxy developed their ‘Beam’ phone in 2010; this phone is the first of its kind to have an in-built projector meaning the user can play games or watch films without the use of a TV!!

Augmented Reality is something that has long been developed and it often seen to be in use in futuristic films, this is where looking through the lens of a camera it gives you a live up to date view of the objects and locations around you to give live information!

index

Whilst this isn’t on any phone just yet, it is available if you get Google glasses so it won’t be long until this software makes the short jump over to our smart phones in the near future!
